When I first started reading this book, I felt like I would hate it. I didn't care for Emma, the self-loathing, pretentious liberal, or Dexter, egotistical and spoiled. Both are polar opposites and are inexplicably drawn to each other. I couldn't understand how they managed to maintain a friendship over the years when there were many mean spirited jabs at one another. However, the thing one must consider is that this story spans over twenty years, which means growth on both characters' ends. The premise of the story is unique: on July 15th of every year, we get a glimpse of their lives and how the other fits into it at the time. I liked watching the characters develop over the years and found myself actually caring for them. The book did feel like it was written with the sole purpose of becoming a film, which I don't think I'd mind seeing. I'd more than likely wait until it came out on DVD, though.
