What does it take to make a book that will come to be a defining moment for many young girls of a particular generation? 1) Develope a main female character with whom readers can immediately identify (plain, maybe not all-that-pretty, not popular), 2) write a book that includes every schoolgirl's fantasy of the perfect relationship, using the popular culture trend of the day (popularity of vampires at the moment), and 3) place them in danger, and let their love for each other be both the cause of angst and the saving grace. Yes, at the age of 40+ we still want the knight on the white horse to come save us, so I did enjoy reading this book. Of course I did! But I must warn mothers of young readers: This book will permanently warp your daughters' minds as to what a real relationship is like. I know, we all had our minds warped at some point- soap operas, movies on the Lifetime channel, Harlequin romance novels, etc. For those of you in the same age group as myself- remember the movie Blue Lagoon? And how about the book/movie Endless Love? They definitely take on a new meaning on this side of adulthood, to say the least :) But it is an enjoyable read. If you are trying to turn your tweens into "readers" for life, let them read it. If they never enjoy reading, they will not make it a lifetime practice. If you are my age, it is a fun book to read on a leisurely afternoon. Great literature it is not, but it entertaining.
