Not a Jodi Picoult fan, but I read this because I'm a caregiver to a disabled teen and her mom bought it and left it out on the kitchen table. What can I say, I was waiting for the school bus. So yeah. I give it two stars instead of one because it does try to address the issues of raising a child who will need lifelong adaptations and special care (and every now and then she captures them with great accuracy). And it also does try to show the impact of having a disabled sibling on the well child (again, every now and then she really gets it). Someone will take these topics and write a terrific book -- but it's not Jodi Picoult. Too many characters stuffed in and poorly developed, really unappealing and/or unbelievable main characters, a court scene that is so preposterous that it is offensive to the reader, and of course, the disappointing ending that everyone's talking about.
