** spoiler alert ** I was a bit skeptical about reading this book. I just keep hearing about how such a great book it was, then my friends picked it for our first book club novel (ehh I thought) Even that couldn't have even prompted me to purchase the book. Then I saw that a movie was coming out and I knew that there was no way I would ever read this book. I hated hype so I immediately forgot about the book. Until mid October and my friend actually placed the book into my hands. She insisted it was really good( I did not believe her) but I took the book anyway. I didn't pick up the book until early November read the first 4 pages and put it down again until the week of Thanksgiving. By that time I was desperate for any book so I continued to read. Well in my opinion the book started off very slow and boring and if I wasn't so desperate for a read I would have never picked it up again. The Help is a tale of a young southern college graduate named Skeeter and the relationship she forms with some maids. Secretly Skeeter is yearning for some kind of change to occur within her life and seems to not really care for how her friends treat their own maids but of course never says anything about it to them. She is described as very tall and very plain looking with an overbearing southern mama who wants nothing more than for her strange daughter to find a man settle down, get married and have babies. I mean it is the early 60's after all. After her best friend Hilly forces another of their close friend Elizabeth to install a separate bathroom for her maid Abileen does Skeeter really feel that something wrong has been done. The book is also written from Abileen and Minnies point of view. Basically Hillly is a bully and all the "girls" in town follow everything she says.
A brilliant, erudite, entertaining and twisted take on the collegiate psyche.
This was one of my favorite books that I read as a kid.
In Italy we say that you can catch a man passing through the gluttony... And so Tobin falls in love of Kelly at first sigh, but there is a little problem... Tobin is an alien of the Vectra Planet and Kelly is a pastry cook of the Earth. Tobin resolves the problem kidnapping Kelly and taking him on his starship, of which he is the captain. A starship really strange, cause on it all people practices free love and there is no problem of gender: love is love But suddenly Tobin is not so sure he wants to share Kelly's love and body like he shares his cook's skill. Tobin is a light character; even if he is a captain, he is not a commanding role. Kelly instead is somewhat unsure and somewhat strong: even if he has not a role of power, I feel in him more powerness than Tobin. I think the author wants to continue this story, so I will read it to know if this two can manage to build a life together. http://elisa-rolle.livejournal.com/85...
